What are a couple’s name options following Civil Partnership?
Following a civil partnership ceremony one partner may choose to adopt the last name of the other partner. Your civil partnership certificate will generally provide sufficient documentary evidence of your right to use your partner’s surname, so in this case you will not usually need a Deed Poll. There have been some reported problems with the civil partnership certificate being accepted though, and these problems can be avoided if names are changed by Deed Poll.
There are some other popular options for civil partners, who may choose to do any of the following. These options require a Deed Poll name change for the partner or partners who choose to change their name:
- Couples may choose a double-barrelled (hyphenated) last name, joining their two last names together. The couple can save the cost of one Deed Poll if one partner adopts the new name by Deed Poll in advance of the ceremony and ensures that his / her new legal name is shown on the civil partnership certificate. The other partner will then be entitled to use this new name after the ceremony without requiring a Deed Poll of their own.
- One or both partners may choose to adopt the surname of the other partner as a new middle name, thereby clearly demonstrating the link with their partner but maintaining their own surname for use in business etc. A Deed Poll is required for the partner/s changing their name/s in this way.
- The couple may decide on a name that is completely new to each of them, perhaps combining their last names to create one new name, or choosing something completely unrelated to their existing names. Both partners would need a Deed Poll.

Please note, if one or both partners choose to change their names in any way it will be necessary for each of them to notify all the organisations that hold records of them, e.g. the UK Identity and Passport Service, DVLA, bank, insurance companies, credit card companies plus many others, in order that they can amend their records to show the new name. The quick and easy way to do this is to use our New Name Kit.
