How do I change a baby's name?
- Changing your baby’s first or middle name
If your baby is under one year of age, and you want to change your baby’s first or middle name, you can do so by completing a form at the register office where you registered your baby’s birth. You will then receive an amended birth certificate.
If the parents are married, either the mother or the father can complete this form.
If the parents are not married, only the mother is allowed to complete the form.
If your baby is over one year of age, you cannot have the birth certificate amended, but you can still change your baby’s name by Deed Poll. A Deed Poll is a legal document that will show your baby's old and new name, and you should keep it with your baby’s birth certificate. You will then show the two documents together whenever necessary. You can show the Deed Poll to any UK organisation and they will amend your baby's records to show the new name.

- Changing your baby’s last name
Regardless of your baby’s age, it is not possible to amend the birth certificate to show a new last name, but you can change your baby's last name by Deed Poll.
