What are a woman's name options following marriage?

Following marriage a woman may choose to do any of the following.

Options that do not require a Deed Poll:


  • Continue to use her maiden name
  • Adopt her husband’s last name in place of her maiden name

    Options that require a Deed Poll:


  • To use her maiden name as a middle name
  • To take her husbands last name as a middle name. She then retains her last name but adopts a part of her husband’s identity.
  • To choose a hyphenated (double-barrelled) name joining her last name with her husband’s last name. She can avoid applying for her own Deed Poll if her husband-to-be also wishes to be known by the double-barrelled name and he applies for a Deed Poll in advance of the wedding. If the new double-barrelled name appears on the marriage certificate, the wife may legally adopt this surname as her own without a Deed Poll.

    Please note: If a woman chooses to change her name in any way it will be necessary for her to notify all the organisations that hold records of her, E.G. the UK Passport Service, DVLA, bank, insurance companies, credit card companies plus many others, in order that records can be amended to show her new name.
