What is a Deed Poll and why do I need one?
A Deed Poll is the widely recognised name for the legal document that enables you to officially change your name, and have your personal records and documents amended to show your new name.
It is also known as a ‘Deed of Change of Name’, but the term ‘Deed Poll’ is more commonly used throughout the UK.
A Deed Poll is a legal document and the person who signs it, dates it, and has it witnessed, is committing themselves to the following action:
• To renounce and abandon the use of a former name
• To use their new name/s at all times
• To require everybody to address them only by their new name
If you make a change to your name, official organisations will want to see legal proof of the change before they will amend your personal records or re-issue documents. A Deed Poll provides this proof.
If your name is changing following marriage, divorce or civil partnership, the certificate you are given by the relevant authority will often, but not always, provide the necessary legal proof of your new name.
